Every once in a while, one of our Bassmasters of North Alabama gets the urge to take a run at the BIG MONEY and enters one of the Regional Open Tournaments to test their angling skills. Sometimes we get the BASS and sometimes the bass gets US.
On Saturday, August 8, 2009, Bassmaster Jason Borden teamed up with former Elite Series Pro and Langill Lures owner Kevin Langill of North Carolina on the Big "G" (Lake Guntersville) in the Snag Proof Frog Open Tournament. Kevin is a good friend of all the members of Bassmasters of North Alabama and we supported his efforts in the Bassmater Elite Series Circuit. He has now turned his attention to another thing he does best and that is designing, manufacturing, and marketing his own line of bass lures. In just a short while, he has come on board with the "Hover Trap" and "Mr. Lovely" swim baits that are top lures for producing record catches of bass. The lure line is being expanded and Kevin is taking Langill Lures nationwide with partnering agreements with some major distributors. Look for them at a tackle store near you or check them out on Kevin's Web site: http://www.langilllures.com/.
Kevin came into the Guntersville area on Tuesday before the tournament and called BMNA Don Gowen of Decatur to spend an afternoon with him on the water north of Guntersville. Don met Kevin at the ramp and loaded a couple of rods in Kevin's Skeeter and they roared off up river toward Scottsboro. With the Skeeter running on top end, it was but a (15) minute ride to Roseberry Creek to check out the milfoil situation. They found that the landowners surrounding the creek had killed the milfoil off and there was not a bass to be found. Back down lake they ran and found the bass schooling. With the Hoover Trap and Mr. Lovely swinging from their rods, it was bass after bass in the 2 ½ - 3 lb. range. It was almost dark when the fishing buddies finally gave up, with hands raw from taking bass off the hooks, and headed to Boondogles for some excellent Guntersville food.
Prior to the Snag Proof Frog Open tournament on Saturday, Kevin and Jason continued to put bass after bass in the boat, even after they switched to a modified frog which was the only lure that could be used in the upcoming tournament on Saturday. But they could not come up with the "kicker bass" fishing both Kevin's and Jason's "secret holes." However, both anglers were dead tired from catching bass on Kevin's lures.............and that is what it is all about.........putting bass in the boat.
Tournament day came and the guys blasted off with the expectation that a bassmaster has on every day when he puts the boat in the water. The HAWGS were waiting to be caught......they only had to be found. It goes back to the ole saying "almost everyone can catch a bass.....if they can just find it." Kevin and Jason found the bass, but they never could come up with the kicker bass to fill out the stringer on this extremely hot day. At the weigh-in their (5) fish limit hit the scales between 16 - 17 lbs., but far below the 24 lb. first place finisher. Still it was a good tournament for the guys, they improved their tan, and it just goes to show that the Best of the Best can be humbled by MR. Bass at times.
With the weigh-in was taking place, Kevin and Jason's BMNA supporters began to gather with the expectation that the guys would "bring home the bacon." The Snag Proof Frog organization was selling some raffle tickets and some of the bassmasters took a chance for the golden ring. JBMNA angler John Moore was the winner of an armload of prizes and then his dad, Michael Moore's ticket was called. After the weigh-in BMNA bassmaster Billy Pike and his friend from Albertville joined Michael, LittleJohn, Don Gowen, and Jason in inspecting Kevin's latest models of the Mr. Lovely swim bait. As the sun set in the West, we headed home after another good day of fellowship and fun with our friends. After a good night's sleep, Kevin hit the road back to North Carolina to help his wife Trish build their lure business into a very successful enterprise. Look for more good fishing tackle to come from these folks in the coming months.
