DHCA EXCEL FISHING PROGRAM

Decatur, Alabama – Spring – 2010 – “EXCEL”:  Bassmasters of North Alabama and the Decatur Heritage Christian Academy joined together to offer, as a part of the DHCA “EXCEL” quarterly enrichment program, indoor and outdoor class instruction in the skills of bass fishing.  DHCA had already joined in the effort for development of the Alabama High School Bass Fishing Club Tournament Series – an organization for the implementation of bass fishing clubs in High Schools in the State of Alabama, but also elected to expand the learning curve out to interested students in the elementary grades of the school.

Eddie Borden, Don Gowen, and Michael Moore of Bassmasters of North Alabama developed and taught classes at DHCA from lesson plans in:  crankbaits, finding fishing holes, bass biology, How Do Fish Breath Under Water?, A Bass is A Bass, How Do Fish See?, Do Fish Sleep?,  spinnerbaits, plastic, other lures, and knot tying.  Bassmasters of North Alabama are heavily involved in youth development activities working with the Alabama C.A.S.T. for Kids Program, BASS CastingKids Contests, Tim Horton Fishing for Kids Events and sponsoring the Junior Bassmasters of North Alabama.  The instruction also consisted of the students putting what they had learned in practice by engaging in fishing of the ponds on the school property.  They declined to divulge how many fish and the size caught because they want to keep their fishing hole a secret.

Students that participated in the “DHCA EXCEL Fishing Program” included:  Garrett B., Jackson E., Mitchell G., Sterling H., Will J., Taylor L., Clay S., Landon S., Carson S., Parker S., Briana T., and Danny X..  Don Gowen said, “This group of young anglers were some of the most intense and interested students we have ever had, and they displayed a competitive attitude from the first day.  Eddie, Michael, and I were amazed at how much interest they had in learning the skills of bass fishing and how fast they absorbed the materials and instruction we put before them."  "This exercise was highly rewarding to us individually and Bassmasters of North Alabama were proud to be a part of the program. We just hope the parents of the youngsters get them good rods and reels,  pick up the learning process and continue working with them to allow them to fully enjoy the sport of bass fishing,” said Gowen.
